Indirect Water Heaters
Indirect fire water heaters are generally the most efficient & longest lasting choice for most homes. An indirect water heater is a type of storage tank water heater that uses your main boiler to heat water that's circulated through a heat exchanger in the storage tank, heating the domestic water in the tank. Leveraging your main boiler (which is already running in the winter) provides more hot water, greater efficiency, and longer durability than other water heaters, and the highly insulated tank keeps your water hot long after the heating system shuts off in warmer months.
Tankless Coil Water Heaters
A tankless water heater provides hot water without a tank by passing water through a heating coil or heat exchanger in a main furnace or boiler. When the furnace or boiler is hot, the water in the coil instantly heats up and flows to your faucet. Tankless coil water heaters are less expensive to install than storage tank water heaters, but can be inefficient during warmer months as the lack of an insulated hot water storage tank means that your furnace will need to fire up every time you use hot water.
Storage Tank Water Heaters
The most common type of water heater, storage water heaters contain a large tank which heats and holds hot water. The tank is highly insulated, keeping your water hot even when the system is not on. The tanks come in different sizes which determine the amount of hot water you’ll have available on demand at any given time, making the tank size an important consideration in meeting your needs.
